Open Ears provides ear wax removal through a professional ear cleaning technique known as water irrigation. This method utilizes up-to-date practices and equipment that operate with regulated and safe pressures.
Before the ear irrigation procedure begins, a thorough preassessment will be conducted. This includes questions about your ear health and a visual examination of the ear canal using an otoscope.
WHAT IS EAR IRRIGATION?
Ear irrigation is the process of removing ear wax or other foreign bodies from the ear canal using water. Warm water is gently introduced into the ear canal through a small jet (projet) and circulates to help guide the wax out of the ear and into a small metal beaker.
WHAT EAR IRRIGATION IS NOT
It's important to understand that anything blocking sound waves from traveling down the ear canal to the eardrum will lead to reduced hearing. The most common blockage is caused by a plug of ear wax. Even after successful ear wax removal, Open Ears does not guarantee improved hearing. There may be further changes to your ear and hearing structures that require investigation by a trained audiologist. However, having wax removed from the ear canal facilitates more effective assessments by the audiologist or the fitting of hearing aid molds.
Open Ears operates an ear wax removal clinic within Greenfield Eyecare Opticians, previously known as the Allegro Optical building. Our professional ear cleaning services are available through appointments that last 30 minutes and take place at Greenfield Eyecare on Fridays from 9 am to 3:30 pm during the school term.

We recommend using a wax softener twice daily for 5-7 days prior to your clinic appointment. Open Ears suggests using olive oil at room temperature, applied to the blocked ear(s) with a dropper. Tilt your head for 10 minutes to allow the olive oil to effectively penetrate the ear canal.
Please note that if you book an appointment and no ear wax is found during the pre-assessment, or if it is deemed unsafe to proceed with the procedure, a £10 consultation fee will still be charged. If we are unable to remove the wax during the scheduled treatment time, we may offer a second appointment at no additional cost as part of our community nursing initiative.
Open Ears is proud to offer professional ear cleaning services through home visits in the local areas of Saddleworth, Oldham, Holmfirth, and Tameside. Our community nursing team is dedicated to providing personalized care in the comfort of your home.
We allocate up to 1 hour for each home visit appointment, which can be arranged during the day, typically between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. We may also accommodate home visit appointments outside these hours and on weekends.
For those outside the local area, we can arrange a home visit for an additional fuel charge.

Please note that if an appointment has been booked and ear wax is not found in the ear canal during examination, or if it is deemed unsafe to perform the procedure, a £20 consultation fee will still apply. If the ear wax removal was unsuccessful during the initially scheduled treatment, a second appointment may be offered at no additional charge.
